What is Fungal Nail?

Fungal nail infection is also known as toenail fungus or onychomycosis. If your nail is crumbly and white, it may be infected with fungus. Although nail infections don't look very pleasant, they are not a serious medical condition. But that doesn’t stop sufferers from feeling embarrassed about their feet or preventing them from wearing the shoes they want to, especially in summer. Fortunately, there are treatments that can make fungal nail infections go away. These treatments can vary from prescription only fungal nail tablets such as terbinafine (also known under the brand name Lamisil), to over the counter creams and solutions.

Terbinafine fungal nail tablets are an extremely effective medicine for the treatment of toenail fungus. This is because terbinafine tablets are taken orally which allows the medicine to enter the blood. From here it can effectively start to treat fungal nail infections. Results are much faster than with creams and solutions, with most treatment courses lasting 12 weeks. Terbinafine tablets will not cure your already damaged nail, they work by killing the fungus so that a new healthy nail can grow in its place.

Over the counter creams and prescription only solutions such as Trosyl (tioconazole) can also be used to treat fungal nail and can be very effective. You may also prefer a topical fungal nail treatment if you are concerned about the side effects of taking fungal nail tablets such as Lamisil or terbinafine. Deciding which treatment method is best for you can be tricky. You will have to weigh up the benefits and possible drawbacks of each treatment method. Our doctors are able to help you make a decision about which fungal nail treatment method is best for you.

Your nail may look white or yellow, crumbly, and raised up from the finger or toe. The skin around your nail may go red. Sometimes the nail lifts off altogether. If you have had toenail fungus infection for a long time, it may be painful and become badly infected, making it difficult to walk. Toenails are more likely to be affected than fingernails.

If you have diabetes and you think you have a fungal nail infection, you should see your doctor as soon as you can. Diabetes can cause damage to the nerves and blood vessels in your feet. So, if you have a fungal nail infection it may take a long time to heal. If your immune system is weak, a fungal nail infection is more serious. If you have HIV or AIDS, or if you are on chemotherapy, you may be more likely to get infections. It's important to see your doctor as soon as possible if you think you have a nail infection.

There are a lot of things you can do to reduce your chances of getting a fungal infection in your nails. Keeping your feet and hands clean and dry is the best protection. But there are many other things you can do. Here are some examples:

  • Take off your shoes when you're at home, to let the air get to your feet
  • Wear shoes made from leather or canvas that let your feet breathe
  • Make sure your shoes fit well
  • Don't borrow other people's shoes
  • Change your socks every day, especially when it's warm
  • Dry your feet well, especially after using communal changing areas
  • Don't walk barefoot in public areas, such as around swimming pools or gyms. Wear flip-flops or sandals
  • Don't borrow other people's towels

Treatment takes time. If your nail has come off, it won't grow back until after the infection has gone away. For some people, it can take as long as one year for their nail to grow back. Using solutions or creams will typically take much longer than fungal nail tablets. Which treatment you chose will depend on the severity of your fungal nail infection and other factors such as other medication you are taking.

Lamisil or terbinafine tablets are usually taken for 12 weeks to treat fungal nail infections. Fungal nail tablets work much faster than topical solutions and creams, as they enter the bloodstream and start to treat the fungus straight away. You will need to take one tablet every day for 12 weeks. Normally after 8 to 10 weeks you will see a new healthy nail start growing. Terbinafine does not change the way that damaged nails look. By killing the fungi, it allows a new nail to start to grow normally. Some people need treatment for six months or more to get results.

Creams and solutions have to be applied for much longer before they take effect, as they first have to penetrate the nail. This can take up to a year in some cases.

To ensure the safe prescription of Terbinafine tablets, our doctors will assess your liver function after 4 weeks of tablet use. With each 6-week starter pack, you'll receive a 10% discount code for MediChecks, allowing you to obtain a straightforward finger prick blood test kit for home use. This kit includes clear instructions for collecting a blood sample by pricking your finger and depositing the drops into a small tube. You can conveniently return the sample using the prepaid envelope to MediCheck's partner laboratory. Your results will be emailed to you.
