Fungal Nail Infection Treatment
How can Anytime Doctor help me?We provide this regulated, specialist service for patients who have been diagnosed with fungal nail infection but find it hard to see a doctor face-to-face. Fungal nail infection is initially diagnosed through a visual inspection of the infected nails, to confirm diagnosis a doctor will usually take a nail clipping and send it to a laboratory for testing.
If you have a fungal nail infection an online doctor can provide you with an online consultation, private prescription and your fungal nail infection treatment delivered next working day to your home or work.
All services provided by Anytime Doctor are safe, fast and confidential (we do not inform your GP). You can obtain treatment within the privacy of your home and without the inconvenience of lengthy doctor waiting rooms.

How does this fungal nail treatment work?Your doctor can prescribe you the antifungal medicine Terbinafine 250 mg or the antifungal nail solution Trosyl® (Tioconazole).
Terbinafine is an effective oral antifungal medicine because the medicine goes into your blood stream to reach the fungal nail. Terbinafine will not work if your nail condition is Not caused by a fungus. You will need to take one tablet every day for 12 weeks. Normally after 8 to 10 weeks you will see a new healthy nail start growing. Terbinafine does not change the way that damaged nails look. By killing the fungi, it allows a new nail to start grow normally. Some people need treatment for six months or more to get results.
Trosyl® (Tioconazole) nail paint is an alternative to oral medicine. Some people prefer a nail paint because Terbinafine can cause side-effects. This is called topical treatment. However, for a nail paint to be effective you may need to apply the paint for up to a year. The active ingredients within Trosyl® (Tioconazole) nail paint gradually go through the nail to reach the nail bed and kill the toenail fungus. Unfortunately due to the length of time patients have to apply the paint, many patients stop applying the varnish and the treatment is ineffective.
Alternative treatments for fungal nail infection?Fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) can be treated in a number of ways including oral Sporanox (Itraconazole Capsules). NHS Clinical eveidence indicates that there is weak evidence to suggest that oral itraconazole is less effective than oral terbinafine for dermatophyte onychomycosis. Six randomized controlled trials (RCTs) found mixed results, but on balance the evidence favours terbinafine over itraconazole.
Toenail fungus is very hard to eradicate using creams and powders available from your pharmacy or online. Fungal nail infections are usually caused by a fungal skin infection spreading to the nails. The fungal spores grow under an infected nail which makes it extremely difficult to treat as over-the-counter topical creams or powders cannot get under the nail.
Effectiveness of fungal nail infection treatmentTerbinafine: Studies indicate that if you take terbinafine tablets every day for 12 weeks, there's a 6 in 10 chance you'll get rid of your fungal nail infection. If you take the drug for 24 weeks, there is a high likelihood you will get rid of your fungal nail infection. Nearly 9 in 10 people who take terbinafine for 24 weeks get rid of their fungal nail infection. As the treatment starts to work you will see a healthy nail growing from the base. The fungi that are killed remain in the nail until the nail grows out.
Trosyl® (Tioconazole): There has not been much research on medicated nail varnishes. Instead of taking tablets to treat your fungal nail infection, you can put an antifungal medicine directly on your nails. This is called topical treatment. Topical treatments may not work as well as antifungal tablets, especially if several of your nails are infected. Because patients need to use topical treatment for longer, many forget to apply the topical treatment causing the fungal nail infection to re-establish.
What are the potential side-effects?All medication can cause side effects.
Terbinafine can cause headaches, loss of appetite, aches, indigestion, diarrhoea or pains in the muscles and joints. Rare but more serious side-effects include liver problems, liver failure or severe skin reactions. Patients with liver or kidney problems will not be prescribed terbinafine but can choose the Trosyl® (Tioconazole) nail paint option instead.
When answering your medical questionnaire it is very important that you answer the questions truthfully to ensure your doctor has a full picture of your medical history before they prescribe you treatment.
