Buy Metronidazole for Bacterial Vaginosis

Metronidazole is a very effective antibiotic for treating bacterial vaginosis. It is available as a single dose and a seven day treatment course. For cases that relapse after treatment a longer course of treatment is advisable. Metronidazole is also available as a vaginal gel. The gel is applied inside the vagina where it destroys the bacteria at the site of the infection.

All our products are genuine UK medicines and are dispensed by our partner pharmacy based in the UK.

About Metronidazole

Description

Metronidazole belongs to a group of medicines called antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria and parasites that cause infections in your body.

Suitability

Do not take Metronidazole if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to metronidazole, nitroimidazoles (e.g. tinidazole) or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Metronidazole tablets should not be taken during pregnancy unless considered absolutely necessary. It is better not to take this medicine if you are breastfeeding because small amounts of it may pass into the mother's milk.

Important Interactions

You must tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take other medicines, in particular:

  • repaglinide, used to treat diabetes
  • medicines to stop your blood clotting (e.g. coumarins, warfarin)
  • medicines used to treat epilepsy (e.g. phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone)
  • lithium (used to treat depression)
  • medicines used to treat cancer (e.g. busulfan, fluorouracil or mycophenolate)
  • disulfiram (used to treat alcohol addiction)
  • medicines used to treat stomach ulcers (e.g. cimetidine)
  • oestrogen contraceptives (known as 'the pill')
  • ciclosporin (used to prevent the rejection of organs after transplant)

Do not drink any alcohol while you are taking Metronidazole tablets and for 48 hours after finishing your course. Drinking alcohol while using Metronidazole tablets might cause unpleasant side effects such as nausea (feeling sick), vomiting (being sick), stomach pain, hot flushes, very fast or uneven heartbeat (palpitations) and headache.

Side Effects
  • skin rash or flushing
  • headache
  • darkening of the urine
  • feeling sleepy or dizzy
  • pains in the muscles or joints
Please Note

All medication can cause side effects. We have only listed a few to be aware of. Details of all side effects, including rare side effects to be aware of, are listed in the patient information leaflet (PIL). When completing your medical questionnaire, it is very important that you answer the questions truthfully. This is to ensure your doctor has a full picture of your medical history before prescribing. List all medicines you are already taking, including non-prescription and herbal medicines.

Alternatives

BV sometimes goes without treatment, as the balance of bacteria in the vagina may correct itself. Metronidazole is available in tablet form and as a gel.

Looking after your medicine

Do not take medicines after the expiry date stamped on the pack. Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.

Medicines are only intended to be used by the person they are prescribed for. Do not give your prescribed medicine to anybody else, even if they have the same symptoms as you. Medicines can be harmful if used by anybody other than the person they have been prescribed for.

What is better for BV, clindamycin or Metronidazole?

Whilst clindamycin is effective in treating bacterial vaginosis, it is also linked to side effects such as diarrhoea and even colitis. It is also more expensive than Metronidazole.

Can Metronidazole be bought over the counter?

Metronidazole is a prescription only medicine in the UK and therefore cannot be bought over the counter without a prescription. Our doctors will issue your prescription after consultation and purchase and this is sent directly to our partner pharmacy, to save you the time and inconvenience of visiting a GP.

Can I get a prescription for BV online?

The good news is - yes you can. Please complete a short online consultation and our doctors will be able to advise you further. If you require treatment for BV, our doctors will prescribe either Metronidazole tablets or Metronidazole vaginal gel that can be delivered directly and discretely to your door.
