What is Genital Herpes?

Genital herpes is a very common sexually transmitted infection (STI) known to be caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It can cause blisters on and around the genitals which can be particularly painful. The virus can also affect other mucous membranes in the body, for example in the mouth, where it can manifest as cold sores.

There are 2 types of herpes virus, known as type 1 and type 2, both of which are very contagious. Some people may be unaware that they are infected with the virus, as they may not have any initial symptoms. The condition may however still be passed on during intimate sexual activity, even if there are no symptoms. The virus can lie dormant in the body after the initial outbreak and can cause further outbreaks usually activated by triggers such as stress. There is no cure for herpes, but antiviral tablets are used to alleviate the symptoms of herpes when you have an outbreak. Herpes suppression treatment courses are also available.

Anytime Doctor provides a regulated specialist service for people who have been diagnosed with herpes or people who recognise the symptoms of herpes after having had a previous episode in the past. If in doubt, please order a postal test kit before requesting treatment. This service also allows you to obtain herpes treatment in advance so you can be ready for your next herpes outbreak.

What are the symptoms of genital herpes?

It is common not to experience symptoms when first exposed to the virus. Symptoms can sometimes take months or even years to appear. However, the symptoms of a primary infection of genital herpes can include:

  • small blisters around genitals, thighs, buttocks and rectum
  • blisters that burst to leave red, open sores
  • vaginal discharge in women
  • pain when urinating
  • flu-like symptoms

Subsequent outbreaks are usually less severe, as your body will have protective antibodies and can better fight the virus. Initial symptoms of a recurrent outbreak usually start with a tingling or burning sensation before the blisters appear.

How effective is genital herpes treatment?

There is no cure to herpes, however it is possible to decrease the discomfort of a herpes outbreak by using herpes treatment in the form of tablets or cream. If you suffer from repeated herpes outbreaks (more than 5 per year) you should consider suppression therapy for chronic genital herpes. This is a lower dose of antiviral drugs taken every day for six to 12 months.

Is genital herpes the same as cold sores?

Both cold sores and genital herpes are caused by the same herpes simplex viruses. As well as being able to transmit the infection from the lips of one person to the lips of another, or person to person between genital areas, it is also possible to pass the infection between the genital area and the lips.

How does someone get infected with the herpes virus?

The herpes virus is transmitted by close skin-to-skin contact with someone who has the infection. This usually occurs during vaginal, anal or oral sex.

If you have sex with someone with obvious herpes sores then you can easily become infected with the virus. It is therefore very important that you do not have sexual intercourse whilst you have active lesions. However the herpes virus is not always obvious and many people are unaware they are infected with HSV. Surprisingly, despite the lack of sores the virus can still be active. This is how most people get infected.

You will need to inform your sexual partner(s) - including future sexual partners - that you have herpes, as it is very easy to transmit the virus.

How long does it take for symptoms of genital herpes to develop?

The first episode usually takes 2 to 20 days to occur after the initial contact, but occasionally symptoms may not occur until months or even years later.

How often does genital herpes recur?

Recurrent outbreaks occur in most, but not all people. They can even happen years after the first outbreak.
