What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is characterised as the inability to achieve or sustain an erection that is hard enough or lasts long enough to complete sexual intercourse or other chosen sexual activity. It can occur as a result of both psychological and physical causes. It is extremely common, an estimated 33% of all British men experience impotence problems.

These issues can occur only occasionally, or every time a sexual act is initiated. No matter what the form or frequency, erectile dysfunction can be extremely frustrating or embarrassing for the person experiencing it and their sexual partners. If you have experienced this on more than one occasion, you may want to consider treatment for erectile dysfunction.

What are the symptoms of erectile dysfunction?

Symptoms of ED include:

  • An inability to achieve erections
  • Erections too soft for penetration
  • Erections that last only briefly

These symptoms may occur every time sex is initiated or only some of the time.

What are the causes of erectile dysfunction?

ED can have a range of causes, both physical and psychological. Psychological factors alone may be to blame in 10% to 20% of men with ED. These factors can also make the problem worse in men whose ED stems from a physical cause.

The most common physical causes include heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure (hypertension). Occasionally, ED is due to a hormone problem. This is more likely if you have a low sex drive (libido) in addition to ED. In this situation a blood test to check the level of testosterone or prolactin may be advised.

Common psychological causes depression, relationship problems, stress, and anxiety (including performance anxiety).

Other factors may include obesity, smoking, alcohol, tiredness, and prescription and illegal drugs. Sometimes, cycling can also be a cause of ED. People who spend more than three hours a week cycling may experience ED due to the saddle placing pressure on the nerves in the penis.

How common is erectile dysfunction?

ED is a very common condition, particularly in older men. It is estimated that half of all men between 40 and 70 years of age will experience ED at least once during their lives.

ED becomes more common as men age, but it is not a part of aging. At age 40, about 5% of men experience ED. At age 65, this number jumps to between 15% and 25%. But this does not mean growing older is the end of your sex life. ED can be treated at any age.

What should I do if I develop persistent erectile dysfunction?

It is best to have a consultation with your doctor. They will likely discuss the problem, go over any medication you may be taking, and do a physical examination. This can help to identify, or rule out, possible underlying causes. Before treatment, your doctor may suggest some tests.

What is the prognosis for erectile dysfunction?

Many men will experience episodes of ED that improve without the need for treatment. Sometimes, persistent ED can be the result of a more serious underlying health condition, such as heart disease. In such cases, treatment will be needed to treat the underlying condition.

Generally, the prognosis for ED is good. Some men will just need to make some lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and taking regular exercise. Other men may need to take medication such as Viagra (sildenafil, also available as generic sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil), Levitra (vardenafil) or Spedra (avanafil).

Which dosage of erectile dysfunction medication do I need?

Always start with the lowest dosage - your doctor will decide which dosage and drug type is most appropriate for you. Your doctor will take into account potential drug interactions, your age, the severity of your erectile dysfunction and any previous history you have had taking impotence treatment. If the lower dose does not prove effective after eight attempts your doctor may advise you to move to a higher dose.
