What is Period Delay Treatment?

Period delay treatment (sometimes called period management medication) is available for women who wish to postpone their period if it falls at an inconvenient time. This could include during exams, a special holiday or a major life event. Your doctor can prescribe you Provera or Norethisterone, which is available from Anytime Doctor as the generic Norethisterone and also under the trade name Primolut N. Both work in a similar way to the natural hormone progesterone. Taken at the right time, Provera or Norethisterone works by preventing the lining of the womb from being shed, therefore delaying your period until you stop taking the tablets.

How effective is period delay treatment?

Norethisterone is usually very effective if you follow your doctor's prescribing instructions and take your tablets at the same time each day.

What happens after I stop taking norethisterone?

After you stop taking norethisterone you will usually have a menstrual bleed (period) 2-3 days after taking your last tablet. If you do not have a period, you must make sure that you are not pregnant before taking any more tablets.
