Non-specific urethritis (NSU), also known as non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) is not a specific infection or disease but is a generic term for specific symptoms. It can be caused by a number of different infections, the most frequent one being chlamydia. NSU not due to chlamydia may be due to exposure to the herpes virus or normal vaginal or throat organisms. NSU can also be brought on by overly energetic sex or vigorous masturbation. If you are suffering from NSU/NGU symptoms or think that you could have been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection it is important to get a full STI screen before seeking treatment. This will ensure you are treated with the correct antibiotic and do not take antibiotics unnecessarily.

Just 3 simple steps
Women do not usually experience any noticeable symptoms. Men can sometimes also be unaware of symptoms, but are more likely to have symptoms, including:
In most cases, NSU (particularly if it is due to chlamydia) is cured by taking a course of the appropriate antibiotics. Occasionally men with persisting NSU may require a second course of antibiotics. However, this treatment will not be effective against all causes of NSU such as NSU brought on by overly energetic sex or vigorous masturbation.
You must not have unprotected sex (sex without using a barrier method) until 14 days after the start of treatment and until symptoms have resolved. This is to ensure you do not pass non-specific urethritis to your partner. It is also recommended that both you and your partner receive treatment to prevent reinfection if they have already been exposed to non-specific urethritis.
If your partner has been exposed to non-specific urethritis, they should also receive treatment to prevent cross- or reinfection of non-specific urethritis. Should your partner also wish to use the Anytime Doctor non-specific urethritis service, they are required to complete their own online consultation.
