Influenza is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It is commonly known as the flu or seasonal flu, although other types of flu exist, such as swine flu and avian flu. It can affect both the upper and lower respiratory tracts, spreading between the nose, throat and lungs. It is spread easily by coughs and sneezes and has a relatively long contagious period, which can start 1-2 days before noticeable symptoms, right up to 7 days after symptoms first started.
This service is for people who do not currently have flu but wish to guard themselves should they get the flu, or if they come into close contact with someone who has flu, avian flu or swine flu.

Just 3 simple steps
Please note not all symptoms are always present.
The flu virus is spread by the small droplets of saliva coughed or sneezed into the air by an infected person. If you breathe in these droplets, you may become infected.
Antiviral tablets are used to accelerate the recovery process if taken within 48 hours of symptoms developing. This means that some of your flu symptoms can be relieved as well as reducing the length and severity of your flu. Tamiflu can reduce the time you are ill by one day and can reduce the likelihood of a serious complication such as pneumonia.
Tamiflu may help someone who is in close contact with another person who already has flu to avoid contracting flu themselves. Please note that the flu is a virus, so antibiotics will not work.
