What is Cystitis?

Cystitis is a common infection of the bladder which causes burning sensations during urination and a frequent need to urinate. Between 20 to 40 per cent of women will get cystitis in their lifetime. Although men can get cystitis, it is rarer than in women, but usually more serious and therefore must be treated by visiting their GP. Unfortunately this service is not available for men for this reason.

This service is only for women who have previously been diagnosed with cystitis by a doctor or nurse and who can recognise the symptoms of cystitis. Anytime Doctor allows you to purchase treatment for immediate use if you currently have symptoms, or treatment for future use if you would like to be prepared for a future outbreak.

What are the symptoms of cystitis?

  • burning sensation when urinating
  • more frequent and persistent urge to urinate
  • raised temperature
  • dark or cloudy urine with a strong odour
  • discomfort in the pelvis or sensation of pressure in the abdomen

One or more symptoms may be present and not all are required for a diagnosis.

Why can't I order cystitis treatment if I have not previously been diagnosed?

The limitation of cystitis self-diagnosis is that there may be another cause of your symptoms other than cystitis. If this is the case, the antibiotic treatment a doctor can prescribe is unlikely to be effective and you would need to see your GP for a face-to-face consultation.

What can I do to prevent cystitis?

Many women with recurring cystitis may be aware of their triggers. Some women find that passing urine after sex can help prevent infections, as can wearing cotton or natural fibre underwear. Keeping well hydrated to flush out the bladder can also help.
