What is Weight Loss Treatment?

Your body needs a certain amount of energy (calories) each day and excess energy is stored as fat in the body. This can quickly lead to becoming overweight. It is estimated that over a third of people in the UK are overweight and obesity is the most common nutritional disorder in western industrialised countries. Around 1 in 4 men and 1 in 4 women in the UK have a Body Mass Index greater than 30 and are therefore classified as obese.

The good news is that the more active you are, the more calories your body needs. By changing your diet, eating less than your body needs and exercising more you force your body to use its existing fat stores for energy. By burning excess fat, you lose weight.

Sometimes however, this alone is not effective enough, but you can be prescribed a medicine called Xenical (orlistat). Xenical stops around 30 percent of the fat you have eaten from being absorbed by your body. It passes through your digestive system and you lose weight as a result. Your doctor will usually only consider medicine for weight loss if changes to your diet and exercise are not effective. If you are prescribed Xenical you will still need to follow a calorie controlled diet and start an exercise plan while taking the medicine.

What is obesity?

Obesity is more than just a few extra pounds. Obesity is the heavy accumulation of fat in your body to such a degree that it rapidly increases your risk of diseases that can damage your health and knock years off your life, such as heart disease and diabetes. The fat may be equally distributed around the body or concentrated on the stomach (apple-shaped) or the hips and thighs (pear-shaped).

For medical purposes, the body mass index (BMI) is used to determine if your weight is in the healthy range. Doctors use BMI because it compares your weight against your height.

  • You are in the normal range if your BMI is between 18.5 and 25
  • You are overweight if your BMI is between 25 and 30
  • You are obese if your BMI is 30 or higher
  • You are morbidly obese if your BMI is 40 or higher

What is my body mass index (BMI)?

A healthy weight range is based on a measurement known as the body mass index (BMI). You can calculate your BMI if you know your weight and your height. It is a good estimate of how much of your body is made up of fat.

How effective is Xenical (orlistat)?

Clinical studies indicate that almost two thirds of people treated with Xenical weight loss medicine plus a calorie controlled diet successfully lost at least 5% of their body weight after 2 years. In comparison, only half of the people treated with a calorie controlled diet alone managed to lose 5% of their weight. In addition to weight loss, patients also benefit from reduced blood pressure, improved ratio of bad to good cholesterol (LDL/HDL cholesterol) and reduced risk or delay of the progression to type 2 diabetes.
