What is Fungal Nail?

Fungal nail infection is also known as toenail fungus or onychomycosis. If your nail is crumbly and white, it may be infected with fungus. Nail infections don't look pleasant, but they are not serious. There are treatments that can make them go away. These treatments can vary from over the counter creams to prescription only treatments such as Terbinafine which is an extremely effective medicine for the treatment of toenail fungus.

All services provided by Anytime Doctor are safe, fast and confidential. You can obtain treatment within the privacy of your home and without the inconvenience of waiting for an appointment.

Medicines at a glance

Description

Terbinafine is an effective oral antifungal medicine because the medicine goes into your blood stream to reach the fungal nail. Terbinafine will not work if your nail condition is not caused by a fungus.

You will need to take one tablet every day for 12 weeks. Normally after 8 to 10 weeks you will see a new healthy nail start growing. Terbinafine does not change the way that damaged nails look. By killing the fungi, it allows a new nail to start to grow normally. Some people need treatment for six months or more to get results.

Trosyl (tioconazole) nail paint is an alternative to oral medicine. Some people prefer a topical treatment because Terbinafine can cause side effects. However, for a nail paint to be effective you may need to apply the paint for up to a year.

The active ingredients within Trosyl (tioconazole) nail paint gradually go through the nail to reach the nail bed and kill the toenail fungus. Unfortunately due to the length of time patients have to use the treatment, many stop applying it before it is effective.

Suitability

Patients with liver or kidney problems will not be prescribed Terbinafine but can choose the Trosyl (tioconazole) nail paint option instead.

Alternatives

Toenail fungus is very hard to eradicate using creams and powders available over the counter. The fungal spores grow under an infected nail which makes it extremely difficult to treat as over the counter topical creams or powders cannot penetrate or get under the nail.

Looking after your medicine

Do not take medicines after the expiry date stamped on the pack. Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.

Medicines are only intended to be used by the person they are prescribed for. Do not give your prescribed medicine to anybody else, even if they have the same symptoms as you. Medicines can be harmful if used by anybody other than the person they have been prescribed for.

Your nail may look white or yellow, crumbly, and raised up from the finger or toe. The skin around your nail may go red. Sometimes the nail lifts off altogether. If you have had toenail fungus infection for a long time, it may be painful and become badly infected, making it difficult to walk. Toenails are more likely to be affected than fingernails.

If you have diabetes and you think you have a fungal nail infection, you should see your doctor as soon as you can. Diabetes can cause damage to the nerves and blood vessels in your feet. So, if you have a fungal nail infection it may take a long time to heal. If your immune system is weak, a fungal nail infection is more serious. If you have HIV or AIDS, or if you are on chemotherapy, you may be more likely to get infections. So it's important to see your doctor as soon as possible if you think you have a nail infection.

Treatment takes time. If your nail has come off, it won't grow back until after the infection has gone away. For some people, it can take as long as one year for their nail to grow back.

There are a lot of things you can do to reduce your chances of getting a fungal infection in your nails. Keeping your feet and hands clean and dry is the best protection. But there are many other things you can do. Here are some examples:

  • Take off your shoes when you're at home, to let the air get to your feet
  • Wear shoes made from leather or canvas that let your feet breathe
  • Make sure your shoes fit well
  • Don't borrow other people's shoes
  • Change your socks every day, especially when it's warm
  • Dry your feet well, especially after using communal changing areas
  • Don't walk barefoot in public areas, such as around swimming pools or gyms. Wear flip-flops or sandals
  • Don't borrow other people's towels
