What is Influenza?
Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is not known to be effective against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and must not be taken as a treatment for this. Please see the latest government advice if you are concerned about coronavirus. For up to date advice about what to do if you are experiencing symptoms, please visit the dedicated NHS pages.
Influenza is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It is commonly known as the flu or seasonal flu, although other types of flu exist, such as swine flu and avian flu. It can affect both the upper and lower respiratory tracts, spreading between the nose, throat and lungs. It is spread easily by coughs and sneezes and has a relatively long contagious period, which can start 1-2 days before noticeable symptoms, right up to 7 days after symptoms first started.
This service is for people who do not currently have flu but wish to guard themselves should they get the flu, or if they come into close contact with someone who has flu, avian flu or swine flu.
All services provided by Anytime Doctor are safe, fast and confidential. You can obtain treatment within the privacy of your home and without the inconvenience of waiting for an appointment.Read more

Medicines at a glance
Tamiflu is the trade name for the antiviral medication oseltamivir. Antiviral medication does not kill the influenza virus but interferes with the way the virus multiplies. It does not cure flu, or offer long-term protection against flu. However, antiviral medication reduces the risk of developing complications and may reduce the severity and duration of symptoms.
All medication can cause side effects. Details of all side effects, including rare side effects to be aware of, are listed in the patient information leaflet (PIL). When completing your medical questionnaire it is very important that you answer the questions truthfully. This is to ensure your doctor has a full picture of your medical history before prescribing. List all medicines you are already taking, including non-prescription and herbal medicines.

Not suitable for women who are pregnant
Relenza is an alternative antiviral drug which is inhaled. You may also wish to consider the seasonal flu vaccine, especially if you are more at risk of developing complications from flu.

What are the symptoms of influenza (flu)?
Please note not all symptoms are always present.
How is flu spread?
The flu virus is spread by the small droplets of saliva coughed or sneezed into the air by an infected person. If you breathe in these droplets, you may become infected.
How effective is a flu antiviral like Tamiflu?
Antiviral tablets are used to accelerate the recovery process if taken within 48 hours of symptoms developing. This means that some of your flu symptoms can be relieved as well as reducing the length and severity of your flu. Tamiflu can reduce the time you are ill by one day and can reduce the likelihood of a serious complication such as pneumonia.
Tamiflu may help someone who is in close contact with another person who already has flu to avoid contracting flu themselves. Please note that the flu is a virus, so antibiotics will not work.
