Description

Metronidazole belongs to a group of medicines called antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria and parasites that cause infections in your body.

Suitability

Do not take Metronidazole if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to metronidazole, nitroimidazoles (e.g. tinidazole) or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Metronidazole tablets should not be taken during pregnancy unless considered absolutely necessary. It is better not to take this medicine if you are breastfeeding because small amounts of it may pass into the mother's milk.

Important Interactions

You must tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take other medicines, in particular:

Please Note

All medication can cause side effects. We have only listed a few to be aware of. Details of all side effects, including rare side effects to be aware of, are listed in the patient information leaflet (PIL). When completing your medical questionnaire, it is very important that you answer the questions truthfully. This is to ensure your doctor has a full picture of your medical history before prescribing. List all medicines you are already taking, including non-prescription and herbal medicines.

Alternatives

Tinidazole is another suitable antibiotic if Metronidazole can not be used.

Looking after your medicine

Do not take medicines after the expiry date stamped on the pack. Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.

Medicines are only intended to be used by the person they are prescribed for. Do not give your prescribed medicine to anybody else, even if they have the same symptoms as you. Medicines can be harmful if used by anybody other than the person they have been prescribed for.

In the UK, Metronidazole is available on prescription only. This means that you cannot purchase Metronidazole from a pharmacy without having a prescription from a doctor. If purchasing Metronidazole online, you will also require a prescription first. Luckily we provide this included in our service at Anytime Doctor. We never endorse purchasing Metronidazole from sources without a prescription.

Drinking alcohol whilst taking Metronidazole can cause very unpleasant and severe side effects, including a rapid heart rate, drop in blood pressure and liver damage. Unpleasant side effects include feeling or being sick and stomach pains.

It is recommended to avoid all alcohol whilst taking Metronidazole, and also for 48 hours after completing treatment. This is important as it can take 48 hours for the antibiotic to be cleared from your body.
