Can I buy Buccastem over the counter?
Buccastem M is available from pharmacies. There is also a version which is prescription only. The Buccastem M contained in our travellers' diarrhoea pack is available to buy from the pharmacy, however it has been included in the travellers' diarrhoea pack due to its usefulness whilst travelling.
How do buccal tablets work?
Buccastem M buccal tablets are taken buccally – this means that the tablets are not swallowed, but instead are placed between your gum and cheek. Once placed, you are likely to forget the tablet is there. The benefit of buccal medication is that it will enter the blood stream relatively fast, due to the many blood vessels in this area of the mouth. This is useful if you are vomiting, as placing the tablet between your gum and cheek may make it easier to take if you are struggling to keep anything down or swallow. Only certain medicines should be taken this way. It is always important to read and follow the instructions on how to take your medicine found in the patient information leaflet.
How long does it take for Buccastem to work?
Buccastem M starts to dissolve as soon as you place it between your gum and cheek. It usually takes up to 2 hours to dissolve fully, but because it enters the blood stream fast through the gums, you should start to feel better much sooner than this.
Can I take Buccastem M if I am pregnant?
No, you must not take Buccastem M tablets if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are unsure, please get medical advice right away.
