What is Trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis vaginalis (also called trichomonas or TV) is a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is a protozoan, which is a tiny bug, similar to bacteria. It can infect the genital area, but it does not usually go further into the body. It often presents with no symptoms, so you can pass on the infection without realising it.

Anytime Doctor provides a regulated specialist service for people who have tested positive for trichomoniasis, or patients who have a sexual partner who has trichomoniasis. If in doubt, please order a postal test kit before requesting treatment.

What are the symptoms of trichomoniasis?

Half of all men and women infected with trichomoniasis may not have any symptoms. When symptoms are present, they can be different in men and women.

In women:

  • vaginal discharge, usually greeny-yellow and may be 'frothy' with an unpleasant or fishy odour
  • vagina and vulva may be itchy and uncomfortable and may make sex painful
  • soreness when passing urine

In men:

  • discharge from the penis
  • soreness when passing urine
  • passing urine more frequently (due to irritation inside the penis)
  • infection of the prostate or epididymis (next to the testis) are rare complications

How effective is this trichomoniasis treatment?

Both the one day course and seven day course of treatment for trichomoniasis are very effective if you follow your doctor's prescribing instructions.

How soon can I have sex after trichomoniasis treatment?

You must not have unprotected sex (sex without using a barrier method) for at least seven days after you have finished your course of trichomoniasis treatment. This is to ensure you do not pass trichomoniasis to your partner. It is also recommended that both you and your sexual partner(s) receive treatment to prevent reinfection if they have already been exposed to trichomoniasis.

Can I order trichomoniasis treatment for my sexual partner?

Any sexual partner exposed to trichomoniasis should also receive treatment to prevent cross- or reinfection of trichomoniasis. It is also important to abstain from unprotected sexual intercourse until 7 days after you and your partner(s) have completed treatment. Please inform all sexual partners within 4 weeks of your diagnosis that they should also have a full STI screen including for trichomoniasis. Should your partner also wish to use the Anytime Doctor trichomoniasis testing or treatment service, they are required to complete their own online consultation.
