What is Acne?
Acne is a skin condition that causes spots and oily skin. It is very common and most people are affected at some stage in their life. It most commonly manifests in the face, but more severe acne can also affect the back and chest area. The types of spots found in acne range from blackheads and whiteheads to more painful papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. Many mild acne outbreaks can be treated with over the counter preparations, available from pharmacies. If your acne becomes more persistent and can't be controlled with over the counter treatments or is impacting the way you feel about your appearance, there are other prescription only topical treatments available to help.
Our doctors can prescribe topical treatments for mild to moderate acne if you have been previously diagnosed by your GP or specialist dermatologist. In the first instance it may be recommended that a topical antibiotic such as Zineryt, or a topical retinoid such as Differin are tried. If these are unsuitable, Skinoren (azelaic acid) may be prescribed, which works in a similar way to the peeling agent benzoyl peroxide. If your acne is still persistent after 8 weeks, you may be suitable to step up to a combination treatment. We offer two types of combination treatment. Duac Once Daily which contains the topical antibiotic clindamycin and the peeling agent benzoyl peroxide, and Epiduo which contains the topical retinoid adapalene and the peeling agent benzoyl peroxide. Our doctors will advise if you are unsure which treatment you need.

Which acne treatment is best for me?
If over the counter treatments have not helped your acne, you may be suitable to try prescription only topical treatments. There are many to choose from and many have different active ingredients. You may wish to consider trying topical treatments one by one in the following order (not at the same time), moving up one level if the previous treatment has been unsuccessful after 8 weeks of use.
Our doctors will advise if you are unsure which treatment you need.
How effective is topical acne treatment?
Results should be noticeable within four to eight weeks of starting treatment. Topical treatments need to be used regularly for several months. The length of treatment will vary from person to person, depending on how bad the acne is at the beginning of treatment.
