What is Weight Loss Treatment?

Your body needs a certain amount of energy (calories) each day and excess energy is stored as fat in the body. This can quickly lead to becoming overweight. It is estimated that over a third of people in the UK are overweight and obesity is the most common nutritional disorder in western industrialised countries. Around 1 in 4 men and 1 in 4 women in the UK have a Body Mass Index greater than 30 and are therefore classified as obese.

The good news is that the more active you are, the more calories your body needs. By changing your diet, eating less than your body needs and exercising more you force your body to use its existing fat stores for energy. By burning excess fat, you lose weight. Sometimes however, this alone is not effective enough.

You can be prescribed a medicine called Xenical (orlistat). Xenical is a prescription-only oral tablet that blocks the action of the fat-digesting lipase enzymes in the intestine. This stops around 30 percent of the fat you have eaten from being absorbed. It simply passes through your digestive system and you lose weight as a result. Your doctor will usually only consider medicine for weight loss if changes to your diet and exercise are not effective. If you are prescribed Xenical you will still need to follow a calorie controlled diet and start an exercise plan while taking the medicine.

All services provided by Anytime Doctor are safe, fast and confidential. You can obtain treatment within the privacy of your home and without the inconvenience of waiting for an appointment.

Description

Xenical (orlistat) blocks the action of the fat-digesting lipase enzymes in the intestine.

One capsule is taken by mouth with liquid with each main meal that contains fat. This medicine can be taken three times daily during (or up to one hour after) each main meal that contains fat. This medicine can interfere with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (e.g., A, D, E, K), so a daily multivitamin supplement containing these nutrients is recommended.

Side Effects
  • diarrhoea
  • loose stools
  • flatulence
Please Note

This medicine can reduce the effectiveness of the oral contraceptive pill if you suffer from severe diarrhoea. If you are on the pill you will need an additional method of contraception (such as condoms) whilst you are taking the medicine.

All medication can cause side effects. Details of all side effects, including rare side effects to be aware of, are listed in the patient information leaflet (PIL). When completing your medical questionnaire it is very important that you answer the questions truthfully. This is to ensure your doctor has a full picture of your medical history before prescribing. List all medicines you are already taking, including non-prescription and herbal medicines.

Suitability

You should not request this treatment service if you are allergic to orlistat, if you suffer from a long-term condition in which the gut does not absorb sufficient nutrients (chronic malabsorption syndrome) or if your normal flow of bile from the liver to the intestines is blocked (cholestasis). This service is not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Alternatives

You can naturally overcome obesity by following a calorie controlled diet and regular exercise. Xenical is used to accelerate this process. However, to maintain your weight loss you need to permanently change your eating and exercise habits.

Reductil (sibutramine) is available but you must see your GP for a face-to-face consultation. Reductil works by inhibiting certain chemicals in the brain which in turn reduces appetite and enhances feelings of fullness. However, Reductil can increase your blood pressure which is why it is not available through an online consultation.

Looking after your medicine

Do not take medicines after the expiry date stamped on the pack. Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.

Medicines are only intended to be used by the person they are prescribed for. Do not give your prescribed medicine to anybody else, even if they have the same symptoms as you. Medicines can be harmful if used by anybody other than the person they have been prescribed for.

Obesity is more than just a few extra pounds. Obesity is the heavy accumulation of fat in your body to such a degree that it rapidly increases your risk of diseases that can damage your health and knock years off your life, such as heart disease and diabetes. The fat may be equally distributed around the body or concentrated on the stomach (apple-shaped) or the hips and thighs (pear-shaped).

For medical purposes, the body mass index (BMI) is used to determine if your weight is in the healthy range. Doctors use BMI because it compares your weight against your height.

  • You are in the normal range if your BMI is between 18.5 and 25
  • You are overweight if your BMI is between 25 and 30
  • You are obese if your BMI is 30 or higher
  • You are morbidly obese if your BMI is 40 or higher

A healthy weight range is based on a measurement known as the body mass index (BMI). You can calculate your BMI if you know your weight and your height. It is a good estimate of how much of your body is made up of fat.

Clinical studies indicate that almost two thirds of people treated with Xenical weight loss medicine plus a calorie controlled diet successfully lost at least 5% of their body weight after 2 years. In comparison, only half of the people treated with a calorie controlled diet alone managed to lose 5% of their weight. In addition to weight loss, patients also benefit from reduced blood pressure, improved ratio of bad to good cholesterol (LDL/HDL cholesterol) and reduced risk or delay of the progression to type 2 diabetes.

Xenical is the brand name for weight loss treatment medicine containing the active ingredient orlistat. A brand name is assigned to a generic medicine by a pharmaceutical company for marketing purposes, usually to make it more memorable.

Orlistat is the generic medicine name (official medicine name). It is medically identical to Xenical.
